May 30, 2018 – Canaan Transport is pleased to announce that the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference and The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers have both reached tentative agreements with the CP Rail. Normal operations will resume by tomorrow morning, May 31. All CP Rail shipments will move on their originally scheduled routes. Impact on cargo delivery timing is anticipated to be minimal.
May 30, 2018 – More than 3,000 conductors and locomotive engineers at Canadian Pacific Rail are on strike. The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference says the workers walked out at 10 p.m. EDT but adds negotiations with the company are ongoing with the help of federal mediators. CP Rail said a tentative three-year contract agreement had been reached with the union representing its 360 signalling workers yesterday night, which is only one of the groups affected. May 28, 2018 – Canadian Pacific (CP) has received notice from the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference – Train & Engine (TCRC) representing locomotive engineers and conductors, and from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) representing signals and communication employees that employee members of the respective unions will be withdrawing their services to operate freight and passenger trains and to maintain CP’s signaling systems in Canada, effective 2200 EST, Tuesday, May 29, 2018.
As such, an embargo application for shipments routing to and from CP Canadian locations is in place effective 0001 EST Wednesday, May 30, 2018. During the embargo, intermodal terminal gates will remain open, in so far as practicable and so long as capacity permits, in order to reduce the impact of the work stoppage by CP’s unionized employees represented by the TCRC and IBEW. Canaan Transport will continue to monitor the situation for our customers.
May 26, 2018 – This afternoon, the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC), representing the running trades, has reported that they and the IBEW, representing the signal maintainers, has issued the 72 hour strike notice to the CPR. Canaan Transport estimates that the earliest a strike could start is 2200 hours EDT, Tuesday, May 29. The union also states that they are committed to continuing to bargain with CP even though the 72 hour notice has been issued.
May 25, 2018 – Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. is set to resume talks with its train operators and signalling workers after they overwhelmingly rejected the company’s contract offer, leaving its already disgruntled customers fearing a labour disruption that could further affect their businesses. About 3,000 members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference voted 98.1 per cent against the company’s final offer Friday. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, which represents 365 signal and communications workers, voted about 97 per cent against the offer.
The results comes after the government intervened last month to force union members to vote on the company’s offer just before a strike deadline, ending mediated talks between the railway and two unions. The unions said they will work with federal mediators, but are prepared to exercise their right to strike if talks fail or the company does not wish to bargain. They could issue a 72-hour strike notice at any time
Talks were set to resume Friday afternoon in Calgary in an attempt to achieve an agreement and avoid a work stoppage. Canaan Transport will keep our customers updated. CP Rail train crews have engaged in two strikes in the past few years. In 2015, they ended a brief walkout and agreed to arbitration after the Harper government warned of back-to-work legislation. Three years earlier, federal back-to-work legislation was enacted to end a 10-day strike.
The next 10 days will be crucial as to whether a strike will be called.
May 24, 2018 – The union representing Canadian Pacific Railway train operators says it will immediately ask for negotiations to resume once the company’s three-year contract offer is rejected by members on Friday afternoon. Teamsters Canada spokesman Christopher Monette says the union expects CP’s offer will be soundly rejected since the negotiating committee recommended that action.
Monette says the union, armed with a rejection from its members, will try to negotiate a deal without resorting to a strike, but would give 72 hours’ notice if they proceed with a strike. Canaan Transport will continue to monitor the situation and advise our customers.
May 21, 2018 – Maersk has expanded its product portfolio between the Europe/Mediterranean region and East-Coast Canada with a new dedicated weekly service offering a direct call to Montreal and Halifax, with transshipment connections from Algeciras and Valencia, Spain, to and from the Middle East, India, Pakistan Africa, and Far East Asia.
This weekly service will be a five-vessel rotation stopping in:
· Salerno and La Spezia, Italy
· Fos-sur-Mer, France
· Algeciras, Spain
· Montreal and Halifax, Canada
· Valencia, Spain
The first sailing is scheduled for July 2, departing from Salerno, and arriving at Montreal’s Cast terminal on July 19.
May 18, 2018 – As of June 1, it will be mandatory to include the following information on both the MAWB and HAWB for all shipments destined to or transiting through China:
· The firm/corporate/company registration code of the shipper, consignee and notify party (when applicable) – This corresponds to a number that varies per country (e.g., in Canada it is the Corporation Number). This code must be indicated on the source document (on the OCI line of the FWB and FHL).
· The contact identifier – This corresponds to the method of contact for the shipper, such as fax or telephone. The contact number must not include any special characters, such as dashes or dots (e.g., 5145551234).
May 17, 2018 – The Office of the British Columbia Container Trucking Commissioner has released a notice that, effective June 1, 2018, regulated trip rates and hourly wages under the Container Trucking Regulation will be raised by 2.6% and the minimum daily call-out rate will be raised to $300 from $200.In addition, the B.C. Minister of Transportation has directed the Container Trucking Commissioner to consult with industry on the sector’s regulated rate structure, including looking at payments on a “round-trip” basis and the regulation of “off-dock” trips, and deliver final recommendations to the Minister in the fall of 2018.
May 13, 2018 – On Thursday, May 3rd GCT Canada announced that Deltaport and Vanterm will implement a Pilot Program on a trial basis of the reservation fees commencing June 1st, 2018 and ending December 31, 2018. Accordingly, beginning June 1, 2018 all gate appointments / Reservations at Vanterm and Deltaport will be charged a $35.00 per container regardless of shift.
