Availability of 20′ containers as a substitute

December 4, 2020 – With the worsening shortage of containers, we are advising customers to consider using 20’ containers as this situation is anticipated to last until Chinese New Year in Feb. 2021.

Organic certificates now required on importation

December 2, 2020 – In the week of December 14, the organic import and admissibility requirements for processed products of chapter 20 will be incorporated into AIRS, in accordance with clause 357(3) of Part 13 of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations. If Canaan Transport is your broker, we must confirm the possession of the certificate at the time of import in the Integrated Import Declaration (IID). Starting in 2022, importers of organic commodities for which the import requirements are included in AIRS will be required to submit a digital copy of the organic product certificate when declaring organic products online using the Integrated Import Declaration system. If you have questions, contact the Canada Organic Regime team, at cfia.opr-rpb.acia@canada.ca.

Air Canada to convert passenger planes to freighters

December 1, 2020 – Air Canada confirmed Friday that it plans to convert several Boeing 767-300 Extended Range aircraft to pure freighters to take advantage of expected airfreight growth, and announced the appointment of Alaska Airlines veteran Jason Berry to lead the cargo division. Air Canada is the first carrier since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic to opt for a hybrid fleet, furthering its reputation for innovation. The exact number of aircraft and the timeframe for conversions remains to be determined. The move into all-cargo aircraft was made possible by the Air Canada Pilots Association (ACPA), which agreed to amend the existing labour contract to allow the airline to operate dedicated cargo aircraft, according to Air Canada. Cargo pilots typically earn less than their passenger counterparts. The new deal enables Montreal-based Air Canada to have lower pay scales for cargo pilots so it can compete with freighter operators.

More container rollovers and delays

November 30, 2020 – Container rollovers at the world’s leading transshipment ports began to climb again last month, according to new research from tracking data provider Ocean Insights. After a global decline in rollovers during September, there were increasing numbers of shipments missing their scheduled loadings with almost every carrier. We continue to assist our customers in this current crunch and ask for understanding as shipments may be delayed.

Transpacific rates will rise in the coming year

November 23, 2020 – Shippers and carriers will enter next year’s transpacific contract negotiation season with capacity being a bigger concern than prices, as the experiences of this year influence contracts that will be signed for next year. “The key question for the next contracting season will be securing capacity,” said Philip Damas, director of Drewry Supply Chain Advisors. The events of this year, which had seen carriers respond to a perceived lack of demand with blanked sailings that had left shippers without space for their cargoes, would be the defining conditions for next year’s negotiations, he said.

Exports to UK and Europe may miss Christmas season

November 18, 2020 – UK container imports offloaded at Antwerp, Rotterdam and Zeebrugge could be stranded for weeks before they can be relayed back, potentially missing out on the Christmas market. Ships diverted from the heavily congested hub ports of Felixstowe, Southampton and London Gateway have mostly discharged their UK imports at the Benelux ports, but now carriers are struggling with their relay options. Moreover, Antwerp and Rotterdam are reported to be “very full” across all of their box terminals, and carriers are now understood to be considering other options, such as Le Havre and Bremerhaven, that could see the delays extended well into next year.

Air Canada was the first airline to temporarily remove cabin seats to enable floor-loading of boxes. It now operates three Boeing 777s and four Airbus A330 without seats, doubling the available volume for each flight.
