March 26, 2020 – Japan will make a fresh attempt to expand the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact to include more Asian economies, such as Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia and the Philippines, after the new coronavirus exposed the risks of supply chains overly dependent on China. First up will be Thailand, a key production hub for many Japanese automakers. The country is expected to announce as early as April its intent to join the TPP. Japan has already begun laying the groundwork by sending a high-ranking negotiator to Thailand. The move comes amid a realization that diversifying production is increasingly important.
March 24, 2020 – Our customers are encouraged to confirm and ensure their own status in their respective provinces as we have had multiple opinions as to what constitutes an essential business. For companies outside of Canada relying on the shipment of goods from suppliers in Canada, we recommend also confirming their status to ensure if they are open during the next few weeks. March 23, 2020 – The Ontario government has released its list of what businesses qualify as Essential. Canaan Transport qualifies under three separate categories: 1. Supply Chains 17. Transportation and 63. Businesses providing shipping and courier services. However, to ensure proper social distancing and to do our part in this crisis, we will continue to maintain our remote working policies that have been in place since last weekend. March 23, 2020 – In an unprecedented move, the governments of Ontario and Quebec have announced their plan to shut down all non essential businesses in the most populous region in Canada starting tomorrow and lasting between 2 – 3 weeks. Canaan Transport maintains that its business is an essential service but out of an abundance of caution, our team members in Ontario and Quebec have already transitioned to working remotely to maintain social distancing. March 20, 2020 – The CBSA recognizes that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic may result in difficulties for importers with submitting a timely accounting for imported goods. Consequently, the CBSA is providing a 45-business-day grace period for late accounting penalties. Clients will not have to submit an application to have late accounting penalties waived. This applies to transactions released from March 11 to May 14, 2020, inclusively. The grace period will be subject to review as the situation evolves.

March 13, 2020 – The Government of Canada has announced that CUSMA (C-4) has now passed through both the House of Commons and the Senate prior to adjournment. It is anticipated that it will receive Royal Assent by the end of today. This paves the way for implementation of the new requirements on June 1, 2020.
March 9, 2020 – A blockade in the Mohawk territory of Kahnawake that halted rail traffic south of Montreal for more than three weeks came to a peaceful end on Thursday as activists voluntarily dismantled their camp next to Canadian Pacific Railway tracks, moving to a new location at the foot of a bridge leading to Montreal. The blockades are over for the time being. Canada’s transport minister said it will take six months to assess the damage, following weeks of turmoil that culminated in the lifting Thursday of the remaining Quebec rail blockades. Combined with the impact of the COVID-19 virus, the Canadian economy will need to work hard to recover what is being lost.
